The Death Railway in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, has a terrible past, having been built with the blood and sweat of WWII captives of war and Asian slave labourers. During WWII, the Japanese Army invaded South East Asia, amassing thousands of skilled and strong war prisoners. These prisoners were subsequently used as labourers to build their projects, including this railway line.
During its 16-month development between 1942 and 1943, over a hundred thousand labourers died. Because of its tragic history, the Thailand-Burma Railway became known as the “Death Railway.”
